What Is Golden Kamuy Based On?
Golden Kamuy is an anime series that’s based on the manga of the same name by Satoru Noda. The manga was serialized from August 2014 to April 2022 in Weekly Young Jump. As for the anime, its first three seasons were made by Geno Studio, but for Season 4, production was transferred over to anime studio Brain’s Base. The show’s first three seasons were composed of 12 episodes each and were released between 2018 to 2020. Meanwhile, Season 4 began airing this month. As for its story, the series follows Saichi Sugimoto aka the “Immortal Sugimoto” who is known for his savagery in the Russo-Japanese war. Following the war, Sugimoto became a gold panner to provide for his dead comrade’s wife. Soon, Sugimoto discovers an urban legend about the gold of Hokkaido’s native Ainu people. According to a mysterious traveler that he meets, the map to this gold is tattooed on the skins of escaped convicts. Sugimoto sets out to find the map and the gold, and in the process, he meets an Ainu girl named Asirpa. Unlike Sugimoto, Asirpa is disinterested in the gold and is instead seeking revenge for her father against the Ainu miners from the legend.
