When the movie first came out in January 2021, it wasn’t able to get a wide theatrical release due to the closures. Instead, the movie was only available in select theaters and on HBO Max when it was released on January 29, 2021. That’s because of the coronavirus outbreak. The film was also the first time that Warner Bros. made a concurrent debut in theaters and on a streaming platform.

Warner Bros.’ official synopsis of the film reads: “Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon (played by Denzel Washington) is sent to Los Angeles for what should have been a quick evidence-gathering assignment. Instead, he becomes embroiled in the search for a killer who is terrorizing the city. Leading the hunt, L.A. Sheriff Department Sergeant Jim Baxter (played by Rami Malek), impressed with Deke’s cop instincts, unofficially engages his help. But as they track the killer, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.”
Is The Little Things Movie Based On True Story?
John Lee Hancock, the writer/director of the film, has loosely based The Little Things’ original story on real-life detective work. Hancock shared with GQ magazine that the Los Angeles atmosphere from the mid-80s inspired him to write the story. That’s because the city was still reeling in from the Night Stalker murders and people were still feeling paranoid. Hancock got to have real-life detective work throughout the research process and said: “I worked out the story first and then I was put in contact with a friend of a friend who was a homicide detective for L.A. County Sheriff’s, named Stan White. He took me under his wing and took me everywhere with him.” The film remains fictional.
