The debate has been running for years whether Velma is, indeed, gay, and somehow, it became an open secret to the fans of Mystery Inc. that she is one. New clips for their new movie, Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! officially confirms her status as a lesbian. New clips of Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo! introducing Coco Diablo, a costume designer, got the confirmation that Velma is actually a lesbian as she couldn’t get her googly-eyes off of Coco and it is a celebration for the fans who have suspicions on the sexuality of Velma. James Gunn who penned the live-action Scooby-Doo film in the 2001, tweeted in 2020 that he tried to make Velma’s sexuality to be translated on-screen as she was explicitly gay in his initial script but it was watered down by the studio, even giving her a love interest in the sequel. Tony Cervone, the supervising producer of the Scooby-Doo series, revealed the sexuality of Velma on Instagram during the 2020 Pride Month celebration, “I’ve said this before, but Velma in ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. She’s gay."

Cervone even added, “We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character when she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.” Cervone cited Marcie’s appearance, too, “There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. You can not like it, but this was our intention.” Through the years, Velma has been suspected of being a lesbian and the fans of the group believe that it is an open secret among them.
