The revelation comes from a new Spider-Man 2099 action figure from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (via Comicbook.com). The toy comes in a box that features the following description:

“Miguel O’Hara tried to manipulate the genetics of former Spider-people and accidentally turned himself into the best Spider-Man in the Multiverse!”

This isn’t exactly a major spoiler if you have already read the comic books. In the comics, Miguel O’Hara is a scientist who tries to re-create the abilities of the original Spider-Man in other people. However, he accidentally causes half of his DNA to be rewritten with a spider’s genetic code.

That’s pretty much what we can expect in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. At this point, it’s safe to say that the character is a good guy. But why does Spider-Man 2099 attack Miles Morales in the teaser for the animated sequel? Hopefully, we’ll find out when the full trailer for the second Spider-Verse film is released in the next few weeks.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson while Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham collaborated on the screenplay. The sequel will feature the voices of Shameik Moore, Oscar Isaac, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Vélez, Issa Rae, and Jason Schwartzman.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release on June 2, 2023.
